Explorer Scout Units in North Devon

North Devon District has two Explorer Scout Units (ESUs), both with active weekly programmes during term time for young people aged 14 – 18 years:

Taw Explorers meet on Thursdays
1st Woolsery Explorers meet on Wednesdays
Torridge Explorers meet on Fridays

All units run their own programs, but we encourage joint events for all Explorer Scouts.

Your scouter is approaching 14

Your Scouter’s amazing journey in Scouts is reaching an exciting new chapter! The next step is Explorers, the inspiring fourth section for 14–18 year olds. Scouts usually move on between 13½ and 14½, whenever it suits them best. Explorers is all about diving deeper into what interests them, boosting leadership skills, and making a real difference in their community.

Explorer Scouts engage in a wide variety of exciting activities, from camping, hiking, and canoeing to adventurous challenges like abseiling and zorbing. They help plan and lead their own programme, take part in team-building exercises, learn survival and outdoor skills, and work towards badges and top awards. Explorers also enjoy social events, camps, expeditions at home and abroad, and the chance to develop practical skills that will help in adulthood.

They have two fantastic options—and can choose one or even both!

  • Join the weekly Explorer group to enjoy a diverse and adventurous programme filled with new friendships and challenges.

  • Become a Young Leader and step into an exciting leadership role, supporting younger sections while completing a special training scheme designed to build valuable skills for life.

As a Young Leader, they’ll complete a series of training modules covering everything from running games confidently to creating positive and inclusive environments. It’s a fun and flexible programme that prepares them to be leaders now and in the future. Just a heads up: they need to take a 6-month break before helping in the Scout section they’ve just left—but it’s worth the wait!

We know you’re proud of your Scouter’s journey so far, and we’re here to support them every step of the way as they grow, lead, and explore. If you have questions or want to chat about the next steps, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

We can’t wait to see all the new adventures, achievements, and friendships that lie ahead for your Scouter!
